Switzerland hosts Tokyo’s S&T Diplomatic Circle Year End Party
Switzerland hosted the Science & Technology Diplomatic Circle’s annual Year End Party 2019. Around 40 members of diplomatic missions in Tokyo and their Japanese partners from governmental bodies, research institutes and universities representing the science community in Tokyo participated in the event.
Empa CEO gives lecture at 20th anniversary symposium of open access journal
Prof. Gian-Luca Bona, CEO of the Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Science and Technology (Empa), gave an invited lecture at a symposium commemorating the 20th anniversary of the open access journal “Science and Technology for Advanced Materials (STAM)”. Empa co-publishes STAM with Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), which organized the symposium.
NIMS Award 2019 honoured Swiss researcher Dr. Pierre Villars for inorganic materials database

Among the researchers honoured this year by the National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS) is Dr. Pierre Villars director of the company Material Phases Data System (MPDS) in Switzerland for his ground-breaking works in the field of “data-driven materials research and data infrastructure”. The NIMS award is presented every year since 2007 to researchers who made vital contributions to the furthering of materials sciences.

Swiss Technology Start-ups at CEATEC present at Venture Café Tokyo
On October 17th 2019, four Swiss start-ups and a research organization participated in a pitching session at Venture Café Tokyo in order to capture the attention of potential Japanese partners. The start-ups were exhibiting at the SwissTech Pavilion at CEATEC, one of Asia’s largest technology fairs in the CPS/IoT area taking place on October 15 until 18. Asyril, CREAL3D, Mandat International, Nomoko and Somniacs also showcased their products at the event.
Nobel Prizes awarded to Japanese and Swiss researchers in the fields of Chemistry and Physics respectively

Amongst the recipients of this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry is Akira Yoshino for his excellent contribution to “the development of lithium – ion batteries”. Dr. Akira Yoshino is an honorary fellow with Asahi Kasei Corp. and a professor at Meijo University in Nagoya. The lithium – ion batteries he developed are expected to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and thus help to lessen the burden of energy production on the environment.

1st Japan-Germany-Switzerland Workshop for Enzyme Technology and Bioprocess Development
On September 10th – 12th the first Japan-Germany-Switzerland Workshop for the Enzyme Technology took place in Toyama, Japan. Building on the history of exchange on these topics between Japan and Switzerland in the field of bioprocess development for 30 years and that between Germany in the area of enzyme technology for 40 years, the newly evolved integrated workshop attracted approximately 70 participants from academia and industry for in-depth discussions.
